The ex-skipper, who had his pads on, was seen watching Shubman Gill as the supporting staff bowled to him with the roboarm alongside spinners.

Virat Kohli was seen telling Shubman Gill that he edged a spinner’s ball straight to the silly fielder. When the next ball Shubman Gill slammed over long-on for six, Virat Kohli was quick to appreciate the shot as well.

Both openers – stand-in captain KL Rahul and Shubman Gill – were seen having an extensive net session at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong before the day’s play.

Shubman Gill departed at 20 on Day 1, whereas Rahul made 22 as both hit three fours apiece.

India cricket team managed to go to 278/6 at the end of the first day’s play, courtesy of a brilliant stand between Shreyas Iyer and Cheteshwar Pujara. Rishabh Pant smacked a quick 45-ball 46 before Mehidy Hasan got the better of him on the very next ball he conceded a big six.

Pujara has been the top run-getter for the visitors so far, scoring 90, followed by Iyer who got 86.

Shubman Gill’s average in Test cricket had declined to 30, but he has been backed by the management as well as his captain.

In a press conference before the game, KL Rahul affirmed that Shubman Gill is part of the red-ball team. He said the decision was taken considering Shubman Gill’s temperament which allows him to be a reliable, all-format player.

Rahul was of the view that Shubman Gill, 23, maybe young at the moment, but his temperament and game awareness make him an automatic selection for the national side.

The Fazilka-native just hit his maiden ODI century in Zimbabwe weeks ago, where he was opening with Shikhar Dhawan, the man Shubman Gill is likely to replace in the coming months.

Ind vs Bang: Shubman Gill for the opener in the Cricket World Cup 2023

The Gujarat Titan star, who is at his prime in every format, is likely to clinch a permanent spot in the white-ball side as an opener.

Dhawan has been unable to impress with his series of low scores in the last series against New Zealand and South Africa.

Although the likes of Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ishan Kishan will be next in line for the opening slot, Shubman Gill’s maturity and past performances will make him the top contender for the job.

The problem with the young players coming in and out of the team has been constant with the India cricket team. A headache that the BCCI has had due to the abundance of talent.

This is why the likes of talents like Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan have had to be sidelined from major tournaments from the team. They were left out of the cricket world cup squad as well, despite delivering decent performances.

However, Rohit Sharma is not going to stick around for long and the same is the case for Dhawan.

Both superstars of India cricket team are at the edge of their careers, and that will open an opportunity for the likes of Shubman Gill, Gaikwad, and others to come and cement a spot for themselves.

Similarly, Iyer has been on a temporary ride in major tournaments despite proving his worth over the years. He has now, however, cemented a spot for himself in ODIs after being India cricket team’s highest run-getter in the 50-over games in 2022.

But it still remains a mystery from the BCCI if they will recall the Sharma-Dhawan duo for the next year’s cricket world cup, or will they back either KL Rahul or Shubman Gill to play the new ball alongside the Mumbai India cricket team's skipper?
