Group 1 of the 2022 T20 World Cup officially begins. This is a Super 12 match between England and Ireland. England captain Jos Butler won the toss and decided to field first. The Green and Whites started strong, thanks to a beautiful knock by their captain Andy Balbirnie. Then, however, a batting collapse resulted in them finishing with 157 on the board with four balls to spare.
England were at 105/5 at 14.3 overs. Moeen Ali was just about to take strike before rain interrupted play. England were five runs behind in the DLS scoring method, which gave Ireland a memorable win as the game was called off.
This result means that Ireland and England sit at two points each in Group 1. Both teams have now won one and lost one. However, the 2010 champions are above in the group standings due to a higher net run rate.
Ireland's Knock At The T20 World Cup 2022
If we look at the game from Ireland’s perspective, we can conclude that their first ten overs in the batting innings were pivotal to their stunning win. The Men in Green were 92-1 after the first ten overs and, despite their collapse, finished with 157 runs on the board.
Ireland’s big knock came from their captain Balbirnie. The right-handed batsman scored an outstanding 62 off 47 balls, with five fours and two sixes. It was his eighth T20 century and 23rd across all formats.
The 31-year-old was hit on the finger by Mark Wood, who was bowling at an explosive speed of 154 kph. However, he was resolute and led his team from the front. He built a strong partnership with wicket-keeper Lorcan Tucker as they found the gaps consistently.
Ireland: The Upset Kings Of ICC Tournaments
No matter who wins the ICC WT20 in 2022, one thing is sure you cannot afford to have Ireland in your group. They habitually take out the big boys in the ICC tournaments.
It was their second massive upset in this year’s WT20 after beating West Indies in the qualifiers.
It is also Ireland’s second win over the Three Lions in an ICC tournament. Their last win over England came in the 2011 World Cup, where Kevin O’Brien scored a memorable hundred.
They also memorably knocked out Pakistan in the 2007 World Cup. When you have a team that becomes a banana skin for the big teams, you know that you must be at your A game to beat them.
T20 World Cup 2022 Cursed By Rain
The rain has had an enormous role to play in this year’s ICC WT20 so far. We saw the match between South Africa and Zimbabwe ending up with no result two days ago.
Today, we saw another match finishing without any result between New Zealand and Afghanistan. But the match that has sent shockwaves throughout the cricketing world is the match between England and Ireland.
The way the result was generated shows that teams need to have an aggressive approach right from the start to avoid being defeated by DRS.
Although many could argue that the current World Cup champions were the favourites against the Men in Green during that particular situation, they were statistically behind in the scoring rate. The low scoring rate cost them the match.
England Batters Still Not Performing
No matter your opinion on the DLS scoring method, we can agree that England’s top order cost them the win. The 2010 champions struggled at 29/3 with just one boundary in the first five overs.
Although they recovered through David Malan and Ali, they had too much to do in the end.
Harry Brook doesn’t seem to look like the player who was named man of the series against Pakistan last month. The Lahore Qalandars’ batsman has scored 25 runs in two matches against Ireland and Afghanistan, respectively.
The man of the 2019 World Cup final, Ben Stokes, is yet to find his spark in the tournament with the bat. Although he bowled really well in both matches against Afghanistan and Ireland, he needs to deliver the goods with the bat.
The left-handed batsman has only scored eight runs in two matches of the ICC WT20 Super 12s. The England all-rounder was notably brought into the team ahead of Ben Duckett, who performed really well against Pakistan in the away T20 series.
The lack of performances from Stokes does raise the question whether the 2010 champions are playing the team based on reputation or not.
Similarly, the top order of Phil Salt and Alex Hales was performing really well against Pakistan in the seven-match T20 series. However, the inclusion of captain Butler has taken away the quick starts those two openers brought.
They were fortunate that they didn’t have a huge target to chase against Afghanistan in the opening game. Otherwise, even a target of 140 could have raised a few eyebrows.
Does England need to change their batting line-up, or will they improve with matches? It is a question that only the captain and the management can answer.
England’s Bowling Domination
Although the Three Lions are struggling with their batting, you cannot question their talent with the ball. Butler’s men are the only team so far to have bowled out their opponent team in their first two matches.
England extinguished Afghanistan for 112 runs in their opening game before restricting Ireland to 157 runs in the second match. Their fast bowlers, i.e. Mark Wood, Sam Curran, and Stokes, are enjoying the form of their lives.
Wood finished as the pick of the bowlers as he took three wickets against the Men in Green. Curran and Stokes contributed to the bowling display by taking two and one wickets, respectively.
The trio has taken 15 wickets in the two Super 12 matches. They rested Chris Woakes for this game, who also bowled really well in the previous game.
