The Rules of Texas Holdem Poker

Before you begin playing Holdem, you will want to learn the rules. In Holdem, each player is dealt two private cards that belong to them alone. Five community cards are dealt face-up, to form the board. All players in the game use these shared community cards in conjunction with their own hole cards to each make their best possible five-card poker hand. In Holdem, a player may use any combination of the seven cards available to make the best possible five-card poker hand, using zero, one or two of their private hole cards. To view the rankings of poker hands, visit the poker hand ranks page.

Start the game, the player needs to bet within the time limit and decide to call or not:

Top 6 Texas Holdem Strategy Guide

Texas Holdem takes a minute to learn, but a lifetime to master, the old saying goes.

But with these top 10 tips, you can make that journey a little shorter. So, if you don not have time to plough through 1,000-page strategy books and want a few pointers before hitting the online tables, take a look at these helpful hints.

To make these changes last even longer, I want to cover essential tips that will help you approach Texas Holdem as a professional player just before going into actual strategy, so make sure to go through all of it.

1. Always keep learning

One of the essential things in poker is to keep improving and never stop growing as a player.

With countless poker tools and resources available these days and new players hungry for success, you are bound to work on your game if you want to reach your long-term goals.

While getting a professional course or even coaching is by far the most efficient approach, you can do a lot of things on your own, which will help you take the upper hands against most players.

Mark and review hands – you should mark questionable hands while playing to review it later on since this is one of the easiest ways to improve your weakest areas. When you know where you are making mistakes, you can study that specific topic and step-by-step counter every leak in your game.

Record your session – another great option is to record your session while playing. It gives an entirely different perspective on your game since you can see how you play from the side and notice mistakes you can otherwise miss. If you have an option, you can also show your video to poker-playing buddies and get their opinion on your play.

Analyze your stats – online poker lets you gather statistics about your play in various spots, so you should take advantage of this information. You can identify essential poker statistics and compare it to the best players in the game to see where you are deviating from the norm and leaving money at the table.

Form a study group – you can create a group with a couple of other players to exchange hand reviews and study specific topics together. A lot of the time, this will help you get different insights about your Texas Holdem strategy and even make the learning process more exciting, which is always a huge benefit on its own.

However, if you want faster results, joining a training site is one of the most effective ways to improve at your game, you just have to pick what suits you.

2. Good Starting Hand Selection

Most Holdem players play too many hands when they start playing the game. As you get more experienced you will learn that you need to fold the majority of your starting hands.

Tight, solid hand selection is a good strategy: stick to high pairs like 10-10, J-J, Q-Q, K-K and A-A to raise with in early position, while you can add pairs like 7-7, 8-8 and 9-9 to raise with when in late position.

Similarly, you can add in suited connectors like A-K, K-Q, and Q-J in early position, and J-10, 10-9 and suited K-10 and Q-10 when in late position.

Hand selection can change depending on the dynamics at the table, of course. If the table is full of weak players who will fold most holdings, you can widen that range even further if you think the bets and raises will get through.

3. Understand Pot & Hand Odds

Although a game of skill, Texas Holdem is a game of assessing the odds. If the pot odds are not as good as the odds of you hitting that miracle card to complete your straight or flush, you need to toss away your hand.

Pot odds can be easy to work out - especially online - but you do not need to be a math whiz to calculate if a hands worth carrying on with.

4. Master the C-Bet

A Continuation Bet (c-bet) is a key strategy of Texas Holdem. Essentially, it is bet you make post-flop when you are first to bet, regardless of the strength of your hand.

Lets say you are dealt Q-10 early in an online cash game. You raise, every player folds, and one player calls. The flop comes 2-7-K. You decide to continue your line that your hand is strong - even though you have missed entirely - and decide to carry on with a bet.

Your opponent may buy the story that you hit the flop hard, and fold, or he may raise as he is made a draw or hand himself. Either way, your decision is easy - you take the hand down there and then, or you simply fold.

C-bets are great for low-stakes cash games where so many hands are dealt. Many players will just let hands go if they have missed the flop and are bet into. Over time, and with enough volume, the c-bet can be the Texas Holdem players strongest weapon.

5. Top Turn Play

OK, so you have tried a sneaky c-bet to get rid of your opponent. Bad news - he is still in the hand and has called. Now, the turn card comes and it looks like it could have completed his straight or flush draw, or paired the board.

Normally, a check on the turn slows things done a lot, but if you bet with a draw and are raised, it is time to get out of there.

6. Have a schedule and plan in advance

Planning your sessions in advance will help to avoid wasting your limited mental energy deciding when to play, and you will be able to use that focus where it is needed the most – in your games.

However, the most significant advantage comes from the ability to plan your learning sessions.

Most of the time, they never even start working on their game. As you can guess, this leads to pore results and tremendously slows down improvement, so if you want to reach high stakes or mane a lot of money, planning is essential for you.
