Bangladesh Captain Shakib Al Hasan's Explains What He Dislikes About BPL 2023
Bangladesh Captain star All-Rounder Shakib Al Hasan criticized the Bangladesh Premier League 2023 for having an inappropriate schedule for player drafts and matches.
BPL 2023 took a lot of time to announce the owners of all the seven franchises participating in the event. The player's draft for the 2023 season got delayed till November 23.
During this time, two other leagues in South Africa and the UAE grabbed the most big-time talents. Although BPL 2023 has attracted some talented players too, they won't be available for the full season. The lack of quality recruitment has frustrated Shakib Al Hasan.
Interestingly, the 35-year-old threw a shade into the situation of BPL 2023 if he becomes CEO of the event.
"If they made me the BPL CEO, it would take me one or two months to correct everything. You have seen the movie Nayak right? If you want to do something, you can't do it in one day," said Shakib Al Hasan as reported by ESPNcricinfo.
The Bangladesh star All-rounder has also criticized the tournament for the lack of marketing, despite the popularity of cricket in the Bangladesh.
"There's no market because we have never created the market. If we could have added value to this market, it would have been really big. Cricket is played everywhere in the country, even in remote villages.
"It is an extremely popular sport in a country of 160-180 million, so I don't believe that there can be no market for cricket here. It is a huge failure in terms of marketing,".
Shakib Al Hasan also said that the reputation of players in BPL is entirely different to what it is in other leagues, such as PSL. If players do well in other leagues, they get a national call-up. However, BPL doesn't seem to care about the performing players in the same way.
The BPL season 2023 starts on January 6 (Friday). The first match will be between Chattogram Challengers and Sylhet Sunrisers at the Sher-e-Bangla stadium.
Shakib Al Hasan's Future
Regardless of what happens from now on, Shakib Al Hasan will go down as one of the greatest all-rounders in cricket history.
The 35-year-old has been there during all the highs of the Tigers in their modern cricket history, including their run to the final in the 2012 Asia Cup.
In the 2022 T20 World Cup, he became the highest wicket-taker at the event.
Although he doesn't have the same prowess that he had a decade ago, his leadership skills are still important to Bangladesh.
However, it is better that the veteran all-rounder doesn't put anymore pressure on himself with the Bangladesh Captain role. The 35-year-old has achieved a lot throughout the course of his career and putting any blame on him for Bangladesh's losses would be the last thing he wants in the twilight of his career.
The Tigers have put together a good run in limited overs cricket recently as they prepare for the World Cup later on this year. After a disappointing Asia Cup, the Asian side beat Netherlands and Zimbabwe in the World T20. However, they weren't able to beat any of the big teams (Pakistan, India and South Africa) in Group A. Eventually, Netherlands beat them to secure their qualification for the next T20 World Cup.
Despite the disappointment in the continental and world tournaments, Bangladesh responded well by beating India 2-1 at home in the three-match ODI series.
As the 2012 Asia Cup runner-ups have the habit of beating anyone on their given day, it will be interesting to see their pathway to the World Cup campaign. Moreover, it would fascinating how their management integrates Shakib Al Hasan and other veteran players in the team.
