Rohit Sharma’s heroics in vain as India cricket team loses ODI 2022 series to Bangladesh Cricket Team
Bangladesh Cricket Team is now 2-0 up in the ODI 2022 home series against the India cricket team following Wednesday's win by five runs at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium.
The final game of ODI 2022 will be played on Saturday before the first Test of the two-Test series is played on December 14.
Former India cricket players and fans have heavily criticized the senior Indian stars for not delivering the goods against the fellow Asian side.
IND vs BAN: Washington Sundar Shines For India Cricket Team in ODI 2022
Once the India cricket team’s pacers gave the team early breakthroughs, Washington Sundar added more agony for the Bangladesh Cricket Team batters as he made hay of the slow track.
Washington Sundar went on to clinch three wickets and gave only 37 runs in his 10 overs. His scalps of Shakib ul Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim, and Afif Hussain reduced the Bangladesh cricket team’s hopes of ever recovering.
At one point, the hosts were reduced to 69/6 after which the Bangladesh cricket team's lower order picked up the pace.
However, Washington Sundar’s performance with the bat has been underwhelming. He hasn’t been the best fielder either for the India cricket team in this series. Washington Sundar has been seen as sluggish on the ropes, which doesn’t give the best reputation to a team known for their brilliant fielding performances.
He has proved himself as the spinner that India cricket team can rely on for major tournaments, but to cement a permanent place in the long run, he will have to up his game in every department.
IND vs BAN: Mehidy Hasan - One Man Army
No Bangladesh cricket team fan would have predicted in the first inning had they been told that a No. 8 batter would save them with an unbeaten ton.
Mahmudullah and Mehidy Hasan defied the odds to push the Indian attack on the ropes and managed to propel the score to 271/7.
To make a recovery of going to 271 from 69/6 was nothing short of a humongous turnaround for the host, who went on to claim their second ODI 2022 series win at home against the 2011 World Champions. The first time they clinched the series from India cricket team was back in 2015.
Mehidy Hasan remained not out on 100 off 83, scoring four sixes and eight fours to keep the hopes alive of the Bangladesh cricket team fans. He was declared Man of the Match for his ton as well as 2/46 with the ball.
Mehidy Hasan was equally important in the second inning, sending both Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul back to the hut.
IND vs BAN: Shreyas Iyer To The Rescue After India Cricket Team’s Top Order Collapses
Virat Kohli opened the innings alongside Shikhar Dhawan as captain Rohit Sharma was undergoing scans on his thumb for an injury he sustained in the first inning while fielding.
And both Kohli and Dhawan walked back to the pavilion within the powerplay. Shreyas Iyer then walked in to stabilize the sinking Indian ship, but Washington Sundar couldn’t extend his stay either.
After Sunday departed for 11, KL Rahul, who was India cricket team’s top scorer in the last game, also got dismissed only for just 14.
This was when Shreyas Iyer decided to counterattack Axar Patel. It took Patel only a couple of balls to smack his first six of the inning and open his account.
The duo brought up a 100-run partnership before getting caught by Afif Hossain. But his 82-run knock brought the visitors a ray of hope which had long gone with their senior batters being dismissed early in the run chase.
He is the India cricket team’s top scorer in ODIs and has become the fastest Indian batter to reach 1,500 ODI runs.
Axar and Shreyas Iyer first focused on saving their wickets and extended their partnership even if the runs dried up for a bit. This proved to be the right move as they took the game deep.
This helped the team but only momentarily because one after another, the remaining wickets began to fall like a deck of cards.
IND vs BAN: Rohit Sharma Battles Injury To Save A Dying Game
Hitman dislocated his thumb and seemed to be in agonizing pain when he walked in to bat at no. 9. From the looks of it, it seemed like the game was long gone for the hosts with only two wickets in hand, but the Mumbai Indians veteran made the hosts crumble under pressure.
He struck a quickfire fifty off 27 balls only. Had there been another batter or all-rounder, on the other hand, the India cricket team would have leveled the series with ease.
Mohammad Siraj absorbed 10 dot balls in his 12-ball 2 while batting with the captain before Mahmudullah claimed his wicket in his penultimate over.
With 40 needed in 2 overs, it went down to 20 needed off the last six deliveries.
Rohit Sharma missed the first ball which was a cutter by Mustafizur Rehman. Rohit Sharma then knew that every ball is going to be a classic Mustafiz cutter. Instead of slamming the ball, he carved two balls behind the point for two fours in a row.
With 12 needed off three, Rohit Sharma faced another dot ball while trying to sweep it past fine leg.
With two sixes needed off two, Rohit Sharma hit a mammoth 95-meter six straight at the back of the bowler’s head to silence the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium.
It was then that the game hung in balance until Mustafizur showed why he is the Bangladesh cricket team’s premier, death-over specialist. He delivered an inch-perfect yorker which Rohit Sharma couldn't get his bat under.
Bangladesh cricket team’s players were quick to check up on Rohit Sharma who walked in discomfort due to his painful hand as well as the sorrow of the series defeat.
Earlier in the Bangladesh cricket team’s batting, he was sent to a Dhaka hospital for an X-ray after he hurt his left thumb while attempting to hold on to a catch in the slips.
Right after the game, the skipper told the media that the thumb is dislocated, but not broken.
