Poker Quick Tips: Position Determines Your Preflop Poker Strategy

The preflop position largely determines the range of our action lines. The starting actions and ranges in tournament tables and typical offline games may differ slightly because tournaments also require the introduction of ICM concepts. However, let's first discuss the situation at typical offline tables.

Although poker quick tips may seem simple, with the general idea that players play fewer hands in early positions and more hands in later positions, the actual impact is not as simple as it seems.

For example, consider chip depth. If we have a stack that is less than or equal to the average stack at the table, in an early position, we may balance our range between medium pairs and big pairs, opting to enter the pot with a call, although it puts us in a passive position, it also conceals our hand strength, allowing players with deeper stacks in later positions to make mistakes.

Of course, when we say position determines preflop poker strategy actions, it also means that if players in later positions are more aggressive, when we have a relatively strong hand, we can also choose to take the initiative, as long as we use a wider range when playing from later positions to maintain a consistent action line, there shouldn't be a big problem.

Poker Quick Tips: Using Image Against Overbet Bluffer

Here's a poker quick tip trick for you all: mix some hands with high card blockers in your calling range, to overbet bluff and seize the initiative when squeezed by opponents in later positions.

You might be confused because this poker quick tip contradicts what we advocated earlier. We mentioned that when our stack is below or equal to the average, we can simply call in late positions. Why is this different?

The key is that we are facing either a single player or a pot that has been raised by more than three players in later positions.

If it's a single player, we can use a strategy that lets the opponent dig a hole, hiding our hand strength while also being able to control the pot when the community cards do not hit our range.

On the other hand, when there are multiple players in later positions who have called, the pot will have expanded to a considerable extent preflop. In this case, whether it's high card blockers or medium to big pairs, they are actually more suitable for heads-up or small pot situations. Therefore, at this point, overbet bluffing, using our relatively tight image to isolate opponents, creating a one-on-one situation, allows us to directly take the pot.

So, the starting points are different, and the resulting action lines naturally differ, but they both belong to the elements of poker quick tips.
