Today, I'd like to share with you an interesting hand review from this month in no limit poker, discussing the process and thought process behind the decisions made.
No Limit Holdem Poker: UTG+1 Limps Preflop
In a 10-player table, live game, blinds 50/50, I have Js Jd in UTG+1. The under the gun UTG poker player straddles to 100, I limp in, the hijack raises to 500, the button calls, and the rest fold to me.
Since I am not familiar with the hijack player's range, and his VPIP is low, with a low fold to 3-bet ratio, I believe the risk of 3-betting J pair in an early position is high, especially since I don't have an A/K blocker.
Additionally, since both the hijack and the button players have deep stacks, in no limit holdem poker, if my 3-bet sizing is not large enough, the button will likely call, and the win rate of J pair in a three-way pot is not significantly high. Therefore, I choose to simply flat-call according to the UTG poker player, partly to conceal my hand strength and partly to wait for the right opportunity. The pot is now 1700.
No Limit Poker: UTG Poker +1 Controls the Flop
The flop comes 4c 4s 10s, which is relatively dry except for a flush draw. After I check, the hijack bets 900, about half the pot, and the button folds. In no limit poker, his range here could include a wide range of hands, including many with an A-high or a high pair, such as A-10 or K-10, which need to bet to protect their hands. Therefore, I choose to just call, and the pot is now 3500.
No Limit Poker: UTG Poker +1 Narrows the Range on the Turn
The turn is 5h. After I check, he also checks, which is interesting. If he had a set or a 10, he would likely bet again, as my calling range has few combinations of 4s, mostly just 4/4 and A/4 of the same suit. I believe he is likely to have two high cards, so as long as the river doesn't bring a high card, a 10, or a spade, I can lead out.
No Limit Holdem Poker: UTG+1's River Action
The river is 5c. I lead out with 1200, about 1/3 of the pot, because I believe he has two high cards. I don't want to bet too big to make him unable to call. Additionally, this size may make him think I have at most a 10 or a lower two high cards, which are not worth showdown in no limit poker. He then raises to 7500, which surprises me a bit.
However, I only lost to his A5 combination. Since all A4 and higher hands would continue for value on the turn, his checking on the turn basically eliminates those hands from his range. Because I beat all his two high card combinations, if we consider suited hands, I only lose to his A5 of spades. In terms of ratios, I need to call, and after calling, he reveals AK offsuit, and I win with JJ, taking down the pot.
Some may ask, why didn't I lead out on the turn to extract value from a flush draw? My reasoning is still based on ranges. Today, he c-bet on the flop, and in no limit holdem poker, a c-bet can be with a wide range, possibly including A pairs and K pairs.
Therefore, if I lead out on the turn, I would give him the opportunity to bluff me or even build a large pot. With a pot of 3500, if I choose to lead out for 1/3 pot, he raises, I call, and the river comes, if he pushes, I would be uncomfortable, as my range would only include J pairs/Q pairs and some 10 pairs, which would be a weak hand against a river shove.
In no limit holdem poker for UTG poker, when in a bad position, I tend to control the pot and gather information.
