Afghanistan Cricket Team Beats Bangladesh Cricket Team To Advance To Next Fight In Asian Cup 2022
Bangladesh and Afghanistan have a history of nail-biting cricket encounters in the past and it adds to the taste of the incoming fixtures in this year’s Asia Cup.
A win for Afghanistan will not just secure their position in the Super 4 of the Asia Cup, but will also make them finish top of Group B. It must be noted that going into this year’s Asia Cup, Group B was considered the group of death.
On the other hand, Bangladesh will play its first game of the Asia Cup. They have announced a 17-member squad, which will be led by Shakib Al Hasan.
The 35-year-old has been one of the greatest all-rounders in the modern era and the Bangladesh Cricket Board has trusted him to lead the side in this continental tournament.
The left-handed batsman will also lead the side in the upcoming World T20 in Australia. Bangladesh has been the runner-up of the Asia Cup in three of the last four events, including the last two events. They also lost a close final against Pakistan at Mirpur in 2012.
Afghanistan And Bangladesh Current Form
Is there a more in-form team in the T20 format than Afghanistan right now? As we have said before, the Men in Blue would be coming into this game hoping to secure their place in the Super 4 of the Asia Cup.
Mohammad Nabi’s men have been in outstanding T20 form since their exit from the World T20 last year. They tied the two-match T20 series against Bangladesh 1-1 before securing a clean sweep against Zimbabwe in the three-match series away from home.
The only negative point for them came in the five-match T20 series against Ireland, which they lost 3-2.
On the other hand, Bangladesh is still trying to rebuild their team that was knocked out in the Super 12 of the World T20 last year. They haven’t had a great time in the T20s recently, losing 3-0 to Pakistan in the three-match T20 series last November.
Even though they showed some resilience against Afghanistan in the two-match T20 series, they tasted defeats once again at the hands of West Indies and Zimbabwe in July and August respectively.
Afghanistan And Bangladesh Key Players
For Afghanistan, the player to watch will have to be Fazalhaq Farooqi. Despite all the spotlight being on Rashid Khan, it was the left-arm fast bowler who came out all guns blazing against the Lankans and blew their top order away.
The 22-year-old finished his spell with three wickets for 11 runs in four overs against the five-time champions. Farooqi’s evolution in Afghanistan is another sign of how the bowling coach Umar Gul has been able to get the best out of his bowling lineup.
Usually, Afghanistan was a team that used to rely on their spinners in terms of taking wickets. To see them taking wickets regularly through their fast bowlers shows there are no weaknesses in their bowling attack anymore.
Shakib Al Hasan
Bangladesh would be relying on their captain Shakib to guide them in the big match against Afghanistan. The all-rounder was sorely missed by the Bangladesh fans in the three-match T20 series against Zimbabwe, which they lost 2-1.
Shakib is not one of the best all-rounders in this game without any reason. He has picked up 112 wickets and scored 2,010 runs in 99 T20 games so far in his career. Therefore, his inclusion will give the Bangladesh group a huge boost. The 35-year-old will return to the team as the T20 captain after three years.
Despite his age, Shakib still tends to bring the best out of him under pressure. His four overs will give Bangladesh a healthy bowling option. In the batting department, the all-rounder will help the inconsistent top-order of the three-time runner-ups.
Shakib would also become the third Bangladesh player after Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah. This feat was also achieved by former Indian captain Virat Kohli in the game against Pakistan two days ago.
