Andar Bahar is an Indian gambling game that is said to have originated in Bengaluru in the southern state of Karnataka, and it is also known in Tamil as Mangatha or Ullae Veliyae. It is a game of pure chance in which the dealer places a card face up and the player bets on one of two piles: Andar (inside) or Bahar (outside). The dealer then deals cards alternately to the two piles until a card appears that matches the initial card. The pile where this matching card appears is the winning pile. In the 21st century Andar Bahar has become a popular game in Indian online casinos.
How To Play Andar Bahar & Game Rules
When you play Andar Bahar the outcome, as with many card games, relies mostly on luck with a little bit of educated guesswork. A single deck of 52 cards is used for the rapid-fire gameplay. To keep it nice and simple, the odds of winning in the game are 50/50.
Players then choose from two sides on the table, which is either Andar (the left side) or Bahar (the right side). When the cards are cut and dealt, the idea is to predict which side an identically numbered card to the chosen card will appear. It is that straightforward!
The Lists of Point Andar Bahar Rules
- A single 52-card deck is used.
- The two main bets are Andar and Bahar.
- Before the first card is dealt, the players may or may not be able to make side bets on what it will be. Possible bets are on the rank or suit of the first card.
- The dealer shall deal the first card and place it in the middle of the table. If there were side bets based on that card, the dealer shall adjudicate them. This first card is sometimes known as the "joker," which I know is confusing. This first card is not wild and has nothing to do with the card generally referred to as a "joker." I prefer to call this card as the "Middle Card," to make explaining the game easier.
- At this point the player may make an Andar or Bahar wager. There may also be side bets on the total cards to be dealt after this point, for example the 20+.
- After bets are made, the dealer will deal cards one at a time until he gets another card matching the rank of the Middle Card. The dealer shall alternate placing cards on the left and right of the Middle Card. In some versions, the dealer starts on the left side of the Middle Card and in others he randomizes it, based on the color of the Middle Card. However, which side the dealer starts on does not matter.
- If the total number of cards dealt after the Middle Card is odd, then the Andar bet shall win. Depending on the version, the Andar bet may pay 0.9 to 1 or 0.95 to 1.
- If the total number of cards dealt after the Middle Card is even, then the Bahar bet shall win. Depending on the version, the Bahar bet may pay 0.95 to 1 or 1 to 1.
- After the Middle Card is matched, any side bets based on the total number of cards dealt after the Middle Card shall be adjudicated.
One of the benefits of playing Andar Bahar is that there is no complicated terminology to learn and remember. It’s a game that’s easy to grasp and can be enjoyed by all ages. Players only have to remember two important things:
Andar – refers to the left betting spot on the table. It means inside in Hindi.
Bahar – refers to the right betting spot on the table. It means outside in Hindi.

If you want to make the most of the game, you may look for online casinos that offer sign up bonuses and promotions you can use while playing Andar Bahar. Here are some of the best casinos where you can play this popular Indian game at live tables.
Andar Bahar Placing Bets
If you are playing Andar Bahar online, then usually there will be a minimum wager that can be placed to participate, which can be as low as ₹10. There will also be a maximum amount which can be as high as ₹10,000. You will be able to choose a game, or a live casino table, with betting limits that fit your budget and personal preferences.
Again, there may be different variations of Andar Bahar available, especially in the live casinos or video versions. However, generally, once the lead card has been displayed, you will be instructed to Place your bets, please. You will then have a few seconds to choose Andar or Bahar as your prediction and place your wager.
Additional Side Bets
In some online Andar Bahar games, there may also be some interesting additional side bets allowed. Players may be able to also bet against the card that the dealer cuts. These side bets can include guessing the lead cards suit or sometimes whether it will be below or above a certain number. Bets are placed by clicking on the appropriate chip amount on the screen, then clicking on the card.
You will always find onscreen Andar Bahar instructions on wagering limits, how to place bets, and if any additional bets can also be at the table maximum limit.
Andar Bahar Payouts
The payouts when playing Andar Bahar are always made on the player’s accurate guess of where the matching card number will appear. However, this also usually relates to whether the first card was a black or red suit and whether it was dealt to Andar or Bahar.
If the matching card appears on the same side as the first dealt card, then players receive a payout of 90%. So, if you had made a bet of ₹100 then you would receive ₹190 in winnings. If the card appears on the other side, then players receive 100%, meaning that your Andar Bahar payout would be ₹200.
The Basic Bet
Before we start with the side bets let me just explain the basic Andar Bahar bet. You bet on either Andar or Bahar to win and the payouts and odds are as follows.
|The Basic Bet||Payout||Odds in Percentage|
Bet on Cards Dealt
This side bet group is related to how many cards are dealt before Andar or Bahar matches the Joker card. For example if you bet 6-10 and Andar matches after 7 cards dealt you the wager.
|Cards Dealt Bet||Payout||Odds in Percentage|
|1-5 Cards Dealt||x3.5||23.81%|
|6-10 Cards Dealt||x4.5||21.7%|

|41 or More Cards Dealt||x120||0.79%|
Joker Card Bets
The joker card andar bahar bets are based on the outcome of the joker card. For example if you place a side bet on below 8 and the joker card is a 5 you win the bet.
|Joker Card Bet||Payout||Odds in Percentage|
|Suit (♣️, ♦️, ♥️ or ♠️)||x3.8||25%|
|Color (Red or Black)||x1.9||50%|
Andar Bahar is an extremely interesting and fast-paced card game to play. However, there are not really any tricks players can use to increase their chances of success. Unlike Teen Patti, the result from Andar Bahar depends primarily on good luck. As with most games of chance, there are no strategy guides which can genuinely promise to increase the odds or promise a payout.
However, if you really want to boost your chances of winning, then there are some general tips that will help. It’s essential to study the game before you start playing and understand how the dealing and betting works. You can even practise offline. Remember too to set yourself a budget before you start playing for real money.
The Basic Tips and Tricks For Andar Bahar Game
Firstly, learning and understanding the game and its rules is the base in order to enjoy the game to the fullest. Although Andar Bahar is one of the easiest card games to learn, it does not mean that there are no rules to follow. What you can do is to read about the rules online, watch online tutorials and game plays as well as take some practice rounds on free mode if a video version of the game is available at the online casino you are playing at.
If your first experience is going to be at a land based casino, it is possible to have a look at a few rounds next to the table if someone else is playing as well. Furthermore, check if there are any variations and minimum bets on the game you are about to play.
Also, set a budget as well as the amount when you are happy to leave the table if you get lucky. Although it is possible to change them as no one else controls it except you, it gives a guideline on how much to spend on the game.
Thus, check these before Andar Bahar:
- Learn the rules and understand the game
- Watch tutorials and play the game on free mode, if possible
- Set a budget on how much you are comfortable to lose
But what to focus on when it is time to play? When the game starts, know how much you want to bet. Oftentimes there is not a lot of time given to place the bets, so being certain on the amount you wish to bet makes you less nervous. There are some claims that betting on Andar is lowering the house edge – and actually, the side getting the first card placed has a very minimum advantage of 51,5% compared to 48,5%. However, the advantage is so little that it is often better to just consider it as a game with 50/50 chances.
If there is an option to play variations, it may be a good idea to include it to your game play. And even if it does not bring winnings home, it at least adds excitement and an extra function to the game. In variations there are oftentimes chances to win anything from 3 times your bet to even 100 times your bet. But keep in mind that the more the possible win is, the more unlikely it is. In some cases it is possible to bet only on variations without placing any bets on the base game.
And if you are scared of big losses, you can always go for the classic Martingale strategy when playing Andar Bahar. Although most know it by heart already, Martingale refers to the strategy where you double your stakes each time you lose. However, consider this only if you have a bigger budget to spend and know when to stop if it does not work out.
During the game:
- Know how much to bet and keep an eye on your budget
- Try out game variations
- Give a try on the Martingale strategy
